A talented field of 21 has been nominated for an appearance in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend, highlighted by several notable performers of the 2014 racing calendar so far.
While unable to handle the late pace in either of his last two appearances, trainer Gerald Ryan is confident a step back in class to the 2014 QTC Cup is precisely what is needed for Hot Snitzel to return to the winner’s circle this weekend.
Claiming seven wins and seven minor places from 29 competitive starts to date, Hot Snitzel is a noted performer over events in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, having taken out the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and finished a close second in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) in 2011 as a two-year-old.
Returning to the track in typically competitive form this season, the Snitzel gelding was unlucky to finish second behind Flamberge when blocked for a run in the early stages of the final straight in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m), but returned to winning form when finishing nearly two lengths in the clear in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 26th.
Contesting two Group 1 races for no result so-far since heading north of the border, Hot Snitzel arguably poses the greatest chance of success in this weekend’s QTC Cup.
Ryan is poised to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 QTC Cup, having also nominated Kiwi import Dances On Stars for an appearance this weekend.
Claiming four wins and seven places from 24 competitive appearances so far, Dances On Stars has recorded some positive results throughout his seven race 2014 preparation so far, but is yet to secure much of a competitive run of form.
Returning to racing with an impressive turn of foot to win the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) on January 1st, the gelding out of Starnet was unlucky to finish second in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) to fellow QTC Cup nominee Emblems before running three mid-pack races including both the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) and Sebring Stakes.
Strolling home to win the Listed P.M’s Cup (1300m) on May 3rd, Dances On Stars has arguably received an ideal preparation leading into this weekend’s Group 2 and will pose a serious threat if allocated a favourable barrier on Wednesday morning.
Returning to the spelling paddock following his impressive victory in the Takeover Target Stakes, Emblems has quickly built in form over just two starts this time in; finishing fifth in the Hall Mark Stakes before running on to claim third in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) last time out.
Trainer John O’Shea, who has also nominated Pleiades and La Pieta for the 2014 QTC Cup, is confident Emblems has both the form and class to overcome his talented rivals at Eagle Farm this weekend.
Finishing fourth amongst classy company in the Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) at Doomben last time out, She’s Clean will be lining up for just her second appearance this preparation in the QTC Cup.
Also a noted performer over winter events, the Redoute’s Choice mare won both the SCSI Handicap (1100m) and Listed June Stakes (1200m) before finishing a fighting fifth in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in 2013.
A final field of 16 and barrier draw for the 2014 QTC Cup is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
