A less-than capacity field of 14 runners have been confirmed for a tilt at the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm this weekend, arguably highlighted by the inclusion of talented Gerald Ryan-trained gelding Hot Snitzel.
Securing a competitive total of seven wins and a further seven minor placings from 29 competitive race starts to date, Hot Snitzel is a notable performer over events in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, having won the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), finished third in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and second in the Group 1 J.J Atkins (1600m) in 2011 as a two-year-old.
Returning to racing in similarly good form this season, the son of Snitzel finished second in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) first-up before returning to the winner’s circle with an impressive turn of foot in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 26th.
While yet to hit peak condition in two Group 1 starts in Brisbane most recently, Ryan is confident the step back in class to Group 2 level is precisely what Hot Snitzel is asking for this weekend.
Ryan will be offered twice the chance of success in the QTC Cup this weekend, having also accepted a position in the final field for Dances On Stars.
Securing four wins and seven places from 24 race starts to date, Dances On Stars has arguably returned to the track in career best form in his current preparation; securing an impressive victory in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) first-up and continuing to build in form and class when second in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) just over one week later.
Unlucky to finish fourth when blocked for a run in the Sebring Stakes, the Snitzel gelding strolled home to win the P.M’s Cup on May 3rd before arguably producing his strongest performance so-far when fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) last time out.
Allocated the ideal barrier 3, Dances On Stars is likely to receive the run of the race outside his stable mate and noted speedster Hot Snitzel, and is boosted further by the confirmation talented jockey Brenton Avdulla will take the ride.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 QTC Cup is exciting local Belltone.
Claiming ten wins and eleven places from his 38 competitive starts to date, Belltone is arguably the most experienced runner confirmed in the final field of the 2014 QTC Cup, but will have to overcome the wide and reasonably awkward barrier 12 if to go one better than an impressive second in the race’s 2012 edition.
While unable to handle the pace of major events contested over the spring of 2013, the Brahms gelding appears to have returned to racing in good order this season; overcoming an early check to finish fourth in the Listed P.M’s Cup (1300m) first-up on May 3rd.
A member on in-form trainer Tony Gollan’s arsenal, Alma’s Fury is a great chance of returning to the winner’s circle at Eagle Farm this weekend from the central barrier 6.
Having not contested a competitive start since finishing eighth in the Listed Canberra Cup in early March, Gollan is happy with the work produced by the Refuse To Bend gelding in the lead up to the QTC Cup, and is expecting a polished first-up performance.
Little-known local Architect has been charged with the unenviable task of overcoming the wide barrier 14, while exciting Stuart Kendrick-trained prospect Doubtfilly will leave from the inside gate.
